Nostalgic. Sometimes, we long for the past: for moments we want to remember or recapture. The good times. The golden years. Or perhaps we’re homesick, or longing for something — or someone — that might have been.
This is a picture of Muizenberg – Muys Zijn Bergh which is translated as Mouse Mountain – where I lived for several year in the 1970s. The building on the right is the art deco style Balmoral Hotel, where I spent New Years Eve with three English lads (who were teaching in Swaziland at the time, but in Cape Town over Christmas holidays) a guy from Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and two Kiwi lasses. It was quite an emotional time for me (see this post) and I was glad of their company. The Kiwis and the Rhodesian left on a boat to Australia shortly after and I wished I was travelling with them, but the plan was to join the girls later in the year once I had saved some money. That path was never taken so not only is this photo nostalgic, but also a reminder of ‘what if’.
